'Sargent and the Sea'
John Singer Sargent is best known for his portraits. The Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., is showcasing a different side of the painter with "Sargent and the Sea." The exhibition displays more than 80 of Mr. Sargent's paintings, drawings and watercolors that depict scenes of the beach and ocean. It is on view through Jan. 3.

John Singer Sargent Seascapes at the Corcocan Gallery of Art
One of the sweet memories of my college days is of Claudia's efforts to civilize this young midshipman from Louisiana who so obviously wanted to marry her. She minored in Art History, so she dragged me - quite happily - to the National Gallery in D.C. where we spent countless hours gazing at the great works there as she took notes for her assignments. Actually, I'd sit down on a bench and inspect her as she inspected the paintings. I must have soaked in a bit of her love for fine art, because I still enjoy visiting the National Gallery, where my tastes have evolved from Monet to an appreciation of Rembrandt (I love his religious art). Those romantic memories came to mind when I saw these slides from a new John Singer Sargent exhibit at the Corcoran in D.C. Even this neanderthal was able to dig Sargent way back in the Reagan years. Take a peek! (Follow the link below).
